Discover your superpower

strengths Feb 26, 2021

Let me guess, your top 3 strengths are high communication skills, achievement orientation, and strategic thinking? How do I know that? Because I have been one of those consultants, who has suggested you they are.

What I mean is, I have suggested, that when you prepare for the job interview, carefully read the job requirements. And then refer to the strengths which the position demands. No, do not lie, just pick three of few things you are good at, out of the ones required. And after 15 years in recruiting business, I can guarantee you, all middle-level leadership positions require someone with high communication skills, achievement orientation, and strategic thinking.

But are these 3 things really your strengths? Are they characterizing the unique you?

If you are like most people, you will say, “yes, I am good at those things, so those are my strengths”. You may have been working hard to be good at what you are doing, but have you ever had a chance to think if you enjoy it? Is what you are good at the same as what you really like to do?

Today I truly believe that it's not what we are good at matters most, but what we love to do.

In his book “Go Put Your Strengths to Work”, Marcus Buckingham says, we often identify our strengths and weaknesses in the wrong way. We think of strengths as things we are good at and weaknesses as things, we're bad at. But a better way to think of strengths is to figure out what energizes you. Strengths make you feel strong. They make you feel successful.

Using your strengths, you are fully engaged in what you do, you feel fulfilled and powerful.

For example, I might be good at communication, but I do it because my role requires communicating a lot. If honestly, very often it is draining my energy. I might be good at reaching targets, but I do it because that’s part of my job. As a fact, I feel more fulfilled when I focus on relationships with my team – I love to connect with them on a deeper level. I might be good at strategic thinking, but what engages me are details – I am drawn to take care of them. Do you see, what I mean?

“But what’s the difference?”, you will ask?

“I am good at all those things, and frankly no one cares what I love to do at my work, if I do it well”, you may think.

Some might not care, you are right. But what matters in the first place is that knowing your uniqueness gives you a better understanding of yourself and how you function. And that gives you a chance to be much happier, healthier, more confident, and more successful. Not only that – the business world is changing, too.

You can make a difference only with your unique capabilities.

So, is high communication skills, achievement orientation, and strategic thinking really three characteristics that describe best, who you are? Or are you much more than that? And if yes, what is your superpower? What is your unique fingerprint? I invite you to discover it - to do more of things you are not only good at but love to do!
